Alexander Balaez, Master in Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2019 president, is one of two students chosen nationwide as a national student representative for Physician Assistants for Latino Health (PALH), an official caucus of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) whose purpose is “to promote, educate, and render service to the medical profession/ public on the PA and Latino medical issues through CME, outreach and scholarships.”

Balaez, whose family is from Cuba, says he hopes to use his new role at PALH to advocate for better health care for Latinos. “I have seen first-hand my grandmother come back from the doctor’s [office} not understanding exactly what was done to her or what was prescribed, but going along because she simply trusted the doctor to know what was best,” he says.

His goal is to improve morbidities and mortalities in the Latino community not only by improving Latino’s medical understanding so they can be more involved in their own care, but also educating providers about Hispanic culture and sensitivities.
