The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Master in Physician Assistant Studies program graduated its second class this fall. Commencement ceremonies were held Sunday, December 9, at the FIU Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
At the same ceremony, the College awarded two PhDs in Biomedical Sciences to Jessica Lapierre and Tiyash Parira. Lapierre worked in the lab of Dr. Nazira El Hage. Her dissertation focused on the role of autophagy in HIV Tat and Morphine-induced neurodegeneration using a Beclin1 hemizygous mouse model. Parira was mentored by Dr. Marisela Agudelo. Her doctoral dissertation is titled Chronic alcohol exposure induces epigenetic modifications that regulate the function of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells.
