Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) has appointed Dr. Carmel J. Barrau as chairman and Dr. Albert R. Taño as vice-chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council (the Council).
The Council serves as the principal advisory board for HWCOM. With their leadership and commitment, board members assist the college in matters of strategic importance, including community outreach, partnerships, and resource development.
Dr. Barrau is a longtime supporter of HWCOM. He is a college founder and has served on the Council since 2008. He and wife Josee have established the Carmel J. Barrau, MD, Scholarship Endowment at HWCOM to provide financial assistance to deserving medical students. Dr. Barrau, the first Haitian-American physician appointed to the Florida Board of Medicine, is the founder and president of UniHealth of South Florida, Inc. He is board certified in internal medicine and is on the board of North Shore Medical Center. Dr. Barrau is past president of the AMHE Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad, South Florida Chapter.
Dr. Taño and his wife Debbie also are ardent supporters of the college of medicine and FIU. The Albert and Debbie Taño Simulation Center at HWCOM is named in their honor. Dr. Taño has been on the Council since 2008 and is an active member of the FIU Foundation Board. Dr. Taño is the medical director of Kidz Medical Services, a pediatric multispecialty practice, and director of multiple neonatal units in South Florida. He has held leadership positions in various hospitals and is board certified in pediatrics and neonatology.
Albert Dotson, who has chaired the Council for the past six years, will remain as a board member.
