Guenther Koehne appointed chair of translational medicine

Dr. Guenther Koehne has been named professor and chair of the Department of Translational Medicine.  In this role, Dr. Koehne will mentor medical and graduate students and post-doctoral trainees, will help guide translational research efforts at HWCOM, and will serve as chair of a department comprising three divisions: Internal Medicine, Neurosciences, and Medical & Population Health Sciences Research.

Dr. Koehne, a world-renowned medical oncologist, medical educator, and researcher, is the deputy director and chief of Blood & Marrow Transplantation and Hematologic Oncology of the Miami Cancer Institute (MCI) at Baptist Health South Florida.

Prior to joining MCI, Dr. Koehne was associate attending physician of the Adult Bone Marrow Transplantation Service at Memorial Hospital in New York. He was associate professor of medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and associate member at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

An internationally recognized expert in bone marrow transplantation and in adoptive cellular therapy, Dr. Koehne has authored more than 45 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to 10 book chapters.

Dr. Koehne, received his medical degree and PhD from the Medical University of Hamburg in Germany, followed by a residency in internal medicine at Medical University of Hamburg and at the Rush University Medical Center.  He completed his research fellowship in immunology and fellowship in medical oncology/hematology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
